I did my essay on the ethnic group on Police Officers. I am doing my essay on Police Officers because my brother is a Police Officer and I thought it would be fun and interesting to observe him. By observing my brother Officer Stains (for the Westport Department) I learned alot on what a policeman besides just pulling people over on the road.
I found out that they use alot of equiement during on shift. I interviewed my brother on the objects he uses, the value he has as a Police Officer, the routines that they have and the communtion tools they used.
First I asked my brother what kind of objects he uses. I was informed he uses the police car to ride in to pull people over and to drive to calls. He wears a belt to put all of his supplies on. The supplies that are put on the belt is a tazer, a radio, handcuffs, handcuff keys, pepper spray, a baton, a notebook, a pocket knife, a pen, and a gun. The objects he uses that are not on the belt is a computer that is in his police car and a vest that he wears to all calls.
The tazer on his belt is used to shock people that run away, or give the Police Officers problems such as hitting them. The radio is to hear calls or to page other officers on duty to have them come to the call if you need them. Handcuffs are a major supply that Police Officers uses. They need that to arrest the person. The Handcuff key is to unlock the handcuffs off the person when they get into jail. Like a tazor pepperspary is needed to get people from running away or giving a hard time. Pepperspary is a spray that you spray in the persons eyes to burn and make it hard for them to see, so you can have more control of them.
A baton and a pocket knife are used to defend yourself from a victum who is trying to harm you. My brother also has a notebook and a pen to write down any important infomation they found on there shift. The computer is in the Police car for the Police to do there paperwork and most importantly to run a person plate and pull them over if they did something wrong. The vest is worn at any call because if they vitcum is armed and tries to shoot, the police officer is protected for not getting shot in the chest.
Police Officers also use alot of different types of communtion equitment. The use their radio to communitate back and forth on roll calls, who to watch for during that time. What is happening throughout the day. The computer communtion is used to go on chats with other police officers to find out details, to write "TO/FROMs" a memo to the chief and other officers. The last resort is to use your own personal cellphone to communitate if all other ways of communtion do not work.
My brother works midnight to eight a.m. His routine consist of 12:30a.m road patrol, looking for not normal activety, stopping cars and looking for drugs until 3:00 a.m. At 3:00 a.m he does property checks, checks in for brake in's or damages and park and watch schools. At 4:00a.m to 4:30a.m he has breakfast and does some paperwork/reports. 5:00a.m to 7:00a.m he looks for more cars on the streets. At 7:00a.m he drops his paperwork off at the courts and sits by the middle school to make sure people stop for school zones. 7:45a.m he cleans his car and gives the station any tickets he gave out during work. 8:00a.m he gets to go home, however, he is always on call if they need an extra officer.
By interviewing my brother i learned alot about the ethnic group as a "Police Officer". I learned the backround of a police officer and how they do more then what people think they actually do. I have full respect for my brother and any other police officer now that I know what their purpose is and not just to pull people over because they want to me rude.

This seems like an good essay. Some more detail would come in handy when you are describing the items he uses on his job. You said he uses a baton to stop someone from harming him. What kinds of "harm" would you mean? Maybe it's just me on that idea though. Other than that it was really good.

ReplyDeleteYour brother seems like a good source of information on an important subculture. I'd like to see you question him a little more deeply about what a police officer's life/job are really like, though. How were your views of police officers changed as a result of what he had to say. Surely you knew what the purpose of police officers was before you talked with him, but what were your attitudes about them and what their jobs entailed? What *new* did you realize?
You can start by introducing yr brother as a police officer, but it sounds a little "amateurish" to talk explicitly about essay assignment. (Better to talk about yr preconceptions about police officers.)
1st sentence of 2nd para. isn't really necessary since it's included in objects he uses in next line; also, it's unusual to start with a specific sentence like that, then back out to a more general one.
Where did you talk to him? (you might want to establish this first.)
Much of the para. about objects is familiar to the reader from TV shows if nothing else. Did he give you any more "insider" info? (Grammar note: be careful to use plural verbs with plural subjects, not "The supplies ...is" and "the objects ...is.")
Be sure to use topic sentences at beginning of paras. (a general statement that gives main idea of para.). You do this, for example, in the sentence "Police Officers also use a lot of different types of communtion equitment," but in other paras. your first sentence jumps to something specific.
There's real potential here, I think, if you can get some more specific info from him (maybe some stories about experiences he's had that illustrate something about a policeman's life?)
I like the amount of information that you gave about the objects your brother uses and his routine. It seems to me that if you added some dialogue between the two of you about these things, that it would give a better understanding of what it is like to be a westport police officer. Maybe you could add some information as to what made him want to pursue this career, quoting his answer in your essay. Overall I think that this is a pretty good rough draft, I hope this was of some help. :)
